Meet our dog minders – Ava and Tess from Newport, Sydney.

Local doggy park and why it’s great?

Dearin Reserve is a dog friendly park located on the corner of Gladstone and Kalinya street, Newport. It is Pixie and Goblin’s local doggy park on the water. Dearin Reserve is a safe, quite and secured area, with plenty of room for your dog to run, play and swim. There are many facilities here also such as spare doggy bags, lots of parking  and plenty of seating with an amazing outlook over Pittwater.

Your first childhood dog’s name and breed

Pixie and Goblin were give to me for my eighth birthday. Mum and dad rescued them from the Animal Welfare League. I had asked for only one dog but mum ended up getting two because she felt sorry for Goblin who was the last standing puppy in the litter. Pixie and Goblin are brother and sister and they are both Wired Fox Terrier cross Chihuahua, even though they look nothing alike. I have known Pixie and Goblin for nine years and they are truly my best friends.

What one life lesson could humans learn from dogs?

Accept yourself.

Can you imagine a terrier wishing she/he was a boxer or a poodle envious of a collie’s mane or a pug wanting the nose of a greyhound? We humans spend a lot of time trying to make ourselves look like someone else’s version of perfection instead of loving our unique features, our unique life, and yes, our unique problems. How boring would it be if all dogs (or all humans) looked and behaved alike! Love everything about yourself. The good, the bad and the ugly.

“It’s a dog’s life” because…

They sleep a lot and get fed often. People take their dogs for a walk two times a day and also let them play outside. Dogs get medical care when they are sick or injured. They have no troubles or responsibilities. They can come and go as they please, sleep all day, and never have to work. Our furry friends provide unconditional love, companionship, and more smiles than can be possibly be counted. What a great life! Right?

Best thing about minding?

I absolutely adore watching Pixie and Goblin making new friends and seeing our guest wag their tails with excitement. I love the interaction and having the chance to mind a variety of breeds. I also enjoy getting active as it is the best stress reliever for me. With the dogs, I get in an extra workout whether I want to or not. Living in Newport there are plenty of walking tracks. The big, the small, the young, the old, the pooped, the energetic rest assure everyone will have the chance to get out and about. The minding also gives me the opportunity to still be able to go to school and study in year eleven. During the day when I am at school, mum is home most of the time to take care of my dogs and yours. My sister and I love everything about minding because we get to enjoy the companionship, new adventures, unconditional love, outdoorsy-ism and the amount of knowledge you can learn from minding a variety of breeds.

Favourite breed and why?

I love all dogs. Big or small. Every dog has it own qualities. Just like humans do. Every dog will have advantages and disadvantages. When mum rescued Pixie and Goblin she chose purely on their personality not their breed. Pixie and Goblin has filled our lives with love loyalty, fur, and plenty to smile about. I feel that if any dog will greet you like you have been gone a century when you only went out for a five minute trip to the store is the best dog you could ever ask for.

If you could be any celebrity’s dog for a day who would it be?

Taylor Swift (singer/songwriter) because she has the most cutest cats ever. Taylor Swift is a proud cat lady. She often takes Dr. Meredith Grey and Detective Olivier Benson with her when she ventures out and she documents their lives on her social media account. Taylor Swift loves her kitties and gives them a life of luxury.

What did a dog last do to make you smile?

When Pixie gets overly excited she does some crazy moves like trying to run so fast on the deck that she slip and slides all over the place. If Pixie sees any sort of food she will growl/bark and prance probably trying to tell me to hurry up and feed her while Goblin is the dog to sit and wait for his food to be served.

Tell us a short doggy tale…

When my family was minding Rhum he spent the whole four days chasing us from door to door with the squeaky steak in his mouth. Wanting us to play with him non-stop. He was a funny dog to mind.
